This bustling, scenic pathway has become a total go-to for both locals and visitors, offering the best of Tampa in one beautiful spot. In fact, it’s even been named one of the top riverwalks in the nation by USA TODAY!
Whether you’re into a relaxing stroll, a fun bike ride, or just grabbing a bite with a killer view, the Tampa Riverwalk has something for everyone!
History and Overview of the Tampa Riverwalk
The Tampa Riverwalk isn’t just a pretty spot—it’s a pathway through Tampa’s vibrant history! Spanning 2.6 miles along the Hillsborough River, it stretches from Armature Works to Sparkman Wharf, connecting some of the city’s most beloved attractions, parks, and cultural gems.
Originally envisioned in the 1970s, this waterfront treasure has evolved into a bustling hub of activity, thanks to years of development and investment to expand and enhance the area.
Today, the Riverwalk provides an easy-going experience where you can walk, bike, or even paddle along the river, all while enjoying Tampa’s blend of rich history and modern flair!
Things to Do Along the Tampa Riverwalk
Visit a Museum
There are so many cool Tampa museums to check out along the Tampa Riverwalk! Whether you’re in the mood for some art, history, or family-friendly fun, you’re covered.
Pop into the Tampa Museum of Art for a creative boost, or take the little ones to the Glazer Children’s Museum for hands-on activities. History buffs can dive into the past at the Tampa Bay History Center.
And for some culture and live performances, don’t miss the Straz Center for the Performing Arts—you might catch an amazing show while you’re at it!
Florida Aquarium
The Florida Aquarium is just a short walk from the Tampa Riverwalk, right past Sparkman Wharf, and it’s the perfect family-friendly Tampa activity. Dive into a world of marine wonders and discover diverse aquatic life from around the globe!
You’ll get to see everything from playful otters to colorful coral reefs, adorable penguins, jellyfish, and even sharks. The interactive touch tanks are always a fan favorite—here, you can get hands-on with creatures like stingrays and other fascinating marine life.

Grab a Bite to Eat
When you’re ready to refuel, the Tampa Riverwalk has a seriously great selection of spots to eat! One of my absolute faves is Armature Works—it’s a vibrant food hall with everything from tacos to sushi, and you get to try a bunch of different things in one place.
If you’re in the mood for a fancy date night or just want a great view, head to M. Bird, a rooftop spot that has one of the best views of the Tampa skyline. Perfect for sipping cocktails and watching the sunset!

Boat Tour
Some of the best boat tours in Tampa are located right along the Riverwalk! The Riverwalk Boating Company Mini-Powerboat Rental is a compact, easy-to-drive powerboat that lets you be the captain of your own adventure.
And, if you’re in the mood for a more relaxed and social vibe, hop aboard a Cruisin Tiki. These floating tiki bars provide a laid-back atmosphere with a tropical flair, perfect for enjoying drinks with friends while cruising the scenic waterways!
Kayak or Paddleboard
The Tampa Riverwalk is the perfect spot to get out on the water! Renting a kayak or paddleboard is one of my favorite ways to explore the Hillsborough River at my own pace. You get to soak in the views, paddle past beautiful parks, and just enjoy the calm river vibes. It’s a great way to see Tampa from a whole new perspective!
Stroll, Bike, or Rollerblade
If you’d rather stay on land, no worries—the Riverwalk’s paved pathways are perfect for all sorts of activities! Whether you’re walking, jogging, rollerblading, or biking, the 2.6-mile stretch along the water is one of the best spots in Tampa to get moving.
You can rent bikes easily if you don’t have your own, and be sure to stop at one of the many parks or green spaces to relax or enjoy a picnic!

Pirate Water Taxi
For a totally unique way to travel along the Riverwalk, hop on the Pirate Water Taxi! This charming water taxi service has 14 stops near popular attractions and lets you explore the city from the water.
You can jump on and off at your leisure, and you’ll even get to learn about Tampa’s history with some entertaining narration as you go.
Enjoy a Drink
If you’re in the mood for a drink, you’ve got plenty of options along the Riverwalk! Grab a refreshing beverage at spots like Armature Works, The Sail Pavilion, Stones Throw, or Sparkman Wharf.
You can drink along the Riverwalk—just make sure it’s in an approved Friends of the Riverwalk specialty cup, available from authorized vendors. If you’re in the mood for some nightlife, M. Bird is one of the best rooftop bars in Tampa and often has DJs and delicious craft cocktails.
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park
Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park is a must-see! This beautifully designed 8-acre park is perfect for picnics, lounging, or just enjoying the riverfront views.
The interactive fountains are a hit with families, offering a fun way for the kids to cool off. And the Great Lawn hosts a ton of events, from free outdoor concerts to festivals.
Plus, it’s right next to the Tampa Museum of Art and the Glazer Children’s Museum, so you can easily check out some culture while you’re there. Don’t miss Yoga in the Park every Sunday from 6–7 PM—it’s one of the best free things to do in Tampa!
Enjoy a Market
Armature Works hosts two awesome markets: Heights Night Market and the Second Sunday Artwalk + Vendor Fair. The Heights Night Market happens once a month (the date varies), while the Second Sunday Artwalk is held every second Sunday from 12 PM – 4 PM.
They’re some of the best markets in Tampa! You’ll find a variety of local vendors with unique finds—perfect for picking up some fun souvenirs or just enjoying the local vibe!
Parking Near the Tampa Riverwalk
Parking near the Tampa Riverwalk is super easy with a few convenient options to choose from! Whether you’re headed to Curtis Hixon Waterfront, Sparkman Wharf, or Armature Works, there are plenty of places to park. Here’s what you need to know:
- Poe Garage & Fort Brooke Garage—Both garages are just a short walk away from the Riverwalk. They offer plenty of spaces, and parking is $2 for the first hour with a $15 daily max.
- Sparkman Wharf & Armature Works Parking—If you’re headed to Sparkman Wharf or Armature Works, both have lots where you can pay via ParkMobile. Keep in mind that Armature Works’ lot charges a flat fee on weekends and during busy event days.
- Street Parking—You’ll also find street parking around the area, but make sure to check for any time limits or restrictions before you park.
One tip: If you’re planning to visit on a weekend or during an event, it’s a good idea to arrive early to make sure you snag a spot!
